Challenges of Reverts from the Ummah

In the Name of Allah, the Most Worthy of Worship, the Supreme in Glory.

Reverting to Islam is a smooth journey for some people, but to others, it is a big struggle. This is because a lot of reverts find no support from families or Muslim communities where they find themselves. Hence, finding guidance in respect to fulfillment of the pillars of Islam and assess to authentic books of knowledge become very challenging. Creating a ready system that provides for their spiritual, emotional, mental and social needs as they embrace Islam will go a long way in helping reverts in Islam.

The revert is like a new born; every step essential for the fulfillment of his religious obligations has to be learnt. Sometimes, they unfortunately find guidance in misguided sects, but ignorantly, they are led to further destruction. Beneficial knowledge is authentic knowledge acted upon, so this stresses the need for availability of authentic learning materials within reachable premises, as well as easy accessibility to knowledgeable Muslims around him.

Another problem reverts face is the unavailability of growth-based classes or learning centers specifically designed for them. Many reverts end up seeking knowledge and asking questions from unverified online sites. This is a major setback to their growth, and it has led many into more misguidance.

A harsh reality in the life of the revert is that he is suddenly estranged from his friends and family, because his choice to embrace Islam will not be understood by many. In his struggle to build a new social circle, he finds himself on a lonely path. Here is where the Muslims are expected to show compassion and support, as opposed to treating them with indifference.

While struggling with the new phase of life, many reverts have had to live on the streets because of lack of finance. There are those who had to leave their riba-based jobs or got sacked for using the jilbaab or keeping the beard. Unfortunately, they become stranded and some feel so defeated that they return to their old ways. In this period, a community of supporting Muslims can provide emotional and financial support.

In conclusion, rising up to build a system of support to the reverts, essentially in areas of Aqeedah, Fiqh, and finance, will not only encourage others to take the bold step to Islam, but will also help them become the best amongst the Muslims, as the prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said;

The best among you on the days of ignorance are the best in the days after accepting Islam provided that they acquire true knowledge and understanding of Islam. (Bukhari&Muslim).

We ask Allah to make us strong pillars of support to our brothers and sisters seeking guidance. As-salaam ‘alaykum wa rahmatuLlah wa barakaatuh.
